Pacific Islands Blue Carbon Knowledge Exchange Network (PIBLUEX)

A Pacific-wide network linking governments, NGOs, and practitioners to map, measure, and share blue carbon knowledge for climate action.

What is PIBLUEX?

PIBLUEX is a consortium of Pacific Island government agencies, NGOs, and individuals working on blue carbon assessments across the region.

  • Coordinate mangrove and seagrass carbon stock assessments.
  • Share field methods, data, and lessons learned.
  • Support national climate reporting and blue carbon projects.

Blue carbon ecosystems (mangroves, seagrass, tidal wetlands) hold some of the highest carbon stocks on Earth and are central to Pacific climate mitigation and adaptation strategies.

What the network does

  • Quantifies carbon stocks and sea-level rise response using shared protocols.
  • Supports wall-to-wall mapping of blue carbon ecosystems in island countries.
  • Builds a regional platform showing BCE extent, plots, and carbon data.
  • Links partners to lab facilities for sample processing and analysis.

The network is modeled after successful regional platforms (e.g., Micronesia Challenge), giving Pacific partners a single hub to track progress and access data.

Blue Carbon Dream Team

The “Blue Carbon Dream Team” brings together practitioners from Palau, Fiji, and Samoa to train, test, and apply blue carbon methods side-by-side.

  • Joint field campaigns in mangroves and seagrass meadows.
  • Standardized protocols for Pacific-wide comparability.
  • Support for scaling assessments to additional islands and communities.

Who benefits?

  • Pacific governments strengthening NDCs, NAPs, and GHG inventories.
  • Communities designing nature-based solutions and restoration projects.
  • Partners exploring blue carbon finance and climate resilience initiatives.
